LGBT People Of History Part Twenty Eight Coccinelle
Coccinelle
Born Jacques Charles Dufresnoy in Rue Notre Dame de Nazareth in Paris on the 23rd of August 1931.
Coccinelle chose her name upon entering a career in show business. The translation of Coccinelle from French to English means Lady Bird. She made her debut in 1953 as a transsexual actress in the club ‘Chez Madame Arthur’ in Paris. Later she would perform at the world famous ‘Le Carrousel De Paris’ nightclub. At Le Carousel many other transsexual actresses have performed there such as April Ashley and Marie-Pier Ysser.
In 1958 Coccinelle underwent sex reassignment surgery in Casablanca under Doctor Georges Burou. When Coccinelle returned to France she became a media sensation like that of Christine Jorgensen in the USA.
In 1962 Coccinelle starred in the film “Los Viciosos” and became the very first transsexual woman to become a star.
An activist for transgender people Coccinelle founded the organisation “Devenir Femme” or in English “To Become a Woman”. This organisation provides emotional and practical support to people who are seeking sex reassignment surgery.
She also helped to establish “The Centre for Aid, Research and Information for Transsexuality and Gender Identity.” Coccinelle’s first marriage in the year of 1960, was the first ever transsexual union to be recognised by the French government and established transgendered persons’ legal right to marry.
In October of 2006 Coccinelle suffered a stroke and sadly died in Marseille.
