Ernst Rohm The Gay Nazi

Born November 28th 1887 in Munich Germany was Ernst Julius Rohm to Emile and Julius Rohm his proud parents. A native of Munich Ernst served as an Oberleutnant (1st Lieutenant) with the 13th infantry regiment in the Bavarian army at the beginning of the first world war.

In September of 1914 in Lorraine, France, Ernst was severely wounded to his face, he would carry the scars through out his lifetime, and it was some time later he was promoted to Hauptman (Captain).

When the first world war ended in 1918 some bitter hard four years later with countless losses on both sides the allies won and the Germans were defeated, Ernst returned home to Munich where upon he joined the Freikorps, which was one of the many private militias formed in Munich to combat the communism insurgent that had gained such strong support.

Ernst became a well known man almost a legend in Munich at that time for keeping the communists in their places, He then met Adolf Hitler in 1919 where they became political allies and close friends. Hitler regarded Rohm as one of his best friends allowing him to address him as ‘Adolf’ rather than ‘Mein Fuhrer’ as every one else did.

In 1920 Ernst joined the National Socialist German Workers Party or (NSDAP) where he helped organize the sturmabeitilung (SA) which was a political army mainly used for protecting party leadership and battling opponents such as the communist red front and was also used to terrorize Jews.

Rohm had now become one of the main heads of the party second only to Hitler himself but with one flaw, which would be the weakness that many jealous members in the party would use against him that ended in a dreadful betrayal.

Ernst Rohm was homosexual, he liked young men and preferred them to be aryan mainly blonde and blue eyes this was an unfavorable flaw and was strongly disliked by certain other Nazi members who were jealous and yet afraid of Rohms close friendship with Hitler and strongly wanted him out of the way, they tried always to get rid of Ernst but each time Adolf dismissed the tales he was told until a cleverly forged document was handed to Hitler.

In 1933 Adolf Hitler was elected chancellor of Germany therefore opening a dark chapter in history that would alter the future for generations to come.

One year on from this in 1934 events occurred that would lead to the betrayal and untimely demise of Rohm and seal the fate for many others, A forged document was presented to Hitler stating that Rohm was involved in a revolt against the nazi party and also named his co conspirators also in the SA, it also stated that the revolt was funded and planned by France.

This document that had been presented to Hitler depicting Rohms alleged involvement in this revolt caused Hitler to plan his arrest.

Rohm and several other SA men had gone to the spa on the lake in bad weisee and in the early hours Hitler along with the gestapo raided it, Rohm was taken to prison the rest of the men in the spa were executed. In the prison where Rohm was detained he was offered the chance to take his own life by Hitler to which Rohm refused and was executed by two SS officers in his cell.

Later on the SA was merged into the SS and Gestapo which were the secret police.

I've taken a bit of a pet interest in Rohm, and was shocked to learn that he was gay with Hitler Youth and SA men. I found this video clip of a Hitler Youth parade in which Hitler passes a young boy over to Rohm - http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=50434

Good Day calpol25

I voted this hub up for useful. What is the basis for homophobia? We continue to struggle to analyze and understand this. This article finds particular resonance now, because of events we hear about in the news regarding LGBT matters.

They're having a hard time getting and keeping gay marriage legal in California. Odd that the fiercest resistance is coming from California. We all think of California as a laid-back, super-liberal, "hang ten," and chillin' kind of place (I don't know if you're familiar with California..).

But on the other hand, they did elect Ronald Reagan (ultr right wing Republican, later went on to become president -- a lot like your Margeret Thatcher). Anyway, there still seems to be a problem with "Don't ask, don't tell," in the American military.

This article of yours about Ernst Rohm "The Gay Nazi" is an important reminder that identity is a multifaceted thing. No one defines himself as just this or that (whether the category be sexual orientation, relgion, nationality, ethnic group, Oprah Book Club member, or what have you).

Its a reminder of the role that LGBT people have played throughout history; to put it more crudely that LGBT people have "been all around us all the time without our knowing it." So why then should we freak out when we hear that a buddy of ours whom we worked with at the widget plant, drank beer and played bowling with on the same league, for twenty-five years, "turned out to be gay?"

But what happened to the decades of friendship? What happened to the relationship as co-workers and friends for decades? What happened to all the beer drinking? What happened to the many years of bowling together?

Anyway,calpol25, very well done!

As blake4d would say....

Keep on hubbing.

I quite agree with you winged centaur at least you can see past the gender and remember the person :)

Sorry, but that was NOT Ernst Rohm that Hitler passed a kid too. Anyone familiar with the Nazi heirarchy could state the same thing. Rudolf Hess was with Hitler and Hess disliked Rohm immensly.

I'm also a keen follower of History, the first and second world wars in particular. I'm not sure if you could say it was Rohm's sexuality alone that caused his demise, as Hitler crushed people like ants for all sorts of insane reasons. I'm sure there were plenty of other gay people in the Nazi Party who would have been accommodated if they suited Hitler's agenda. Great hub though. Cheers

Charlie Kendrick 19 months ago

As with many people involved in the Third Reich they were tolerated until they were needed no more. Rohm is a classical example of tolerating extreme behaviour until he was no longer needed.

I am sure there were many gay Nazis but not all of them made exhibitions of themselves.

did you know that this guy is gay and had sex with a man

Kalli 18 months ago

Wow - that was a very naive description of events! Hitler was involved in the making of the forged documents for political ends - so that he could have the SA leadership executed. You really think Hitler was that innocent??

Hi guadalupe

Yes they were, Ernst rohm is a fine example of it, however there were more but they had to keep it silent due to the gestapos ammended version of paragraph 175 outlawing homosexuality with arrest and incarceration in 1935.

Thank you Daryl for your kind comments, x

Yes I believe he was the first one to be known openly as a gay nazi. He was after all the second in command of the party at that time though, so he would be like what our celebrities are to us today.

Hope that this helps.

Thank you so much for reading x

In the clip that was not Ernst Rohm that Hitler passed the young boy to, Rohm is no where to be scene at this event. You are incorrect.

Hi!

It was never "proven" that Roehm was gay BUT when they raided the spa in Bad Wannsee, Roehm was sound asleep in bed with a young man. (Not good for appearances sake.)

In addition, it's been hypothetized that Roehm had the goods on Hitler enjoying male companionship although no one can really prove it.

Hitler wanted rid of Roehm because he was afraid he'd "out" him. Nice guy, that Hitler.

As an aside, my Father mentioned, more than once, that there were Gay men in our Army. No one - at least no one in his outfit - cared as long as the guy did his job. He was in the 8th Air Force and all 10 guys were needed for an effective run of the B-17. One friend of his, Jimmy Dekop was Gay (we're talking the 1940's to the '90's here). He joined the Army WITH my Dad and served with him although on different bases in England. I remember my Father saying (about a lot of things) do you think YOUR generation invented "LGBT, "Cocaine", Marijuana," "Sex" - fill in the blank. Oh, and Jimmy had a wife and 5 children!

Hi

Thank you for posting 34th bomb group, no I know my generation did not create the LGBT or any of what you mentioned but we have brought more awareness about it to light, as it was unheard of and kept silent.

I would love to hear more about your fathers friend Jimmy and alot more your dad he sounds like he had a few tales to tell :)

Professor James Steakley at the University of Wisconsin Madison German Department (also gay) has long hypothicized and written on the homosexuality of not just Rohm, but of Hitler himself.

Rohm was indeed a political threat to Hitler and his demise can be characterized as a "get him before he gets you" manuever in a vicious political/military struggle.

Yeah - Rohm was becoming too powerful - he had control of hundreds of thousands of SA. Others wished to advance their interests - eg Himmler and the SS. Hitler himself operated a governmental system whereby he set up departments which were very similar to each other and watched them scrap amongst each other to gain his favour - divide and rule.

So Rohm being gay was just a homophobic excuse.

Ian.

I agree Ian :)

Rohm had served his purpose and Himmler hated him, not for his homosexuality but because he was Adolf hitlers second in command :)

It was a power thing and everyone trying to beat the other for favour :)

I'm glad I was drawn back Cal.

Jimmy Dekop (deck-oh) was an Irishman fron Buffalo. A dear, lifelong friend f Daddy's.

A quickie for now - Jimmy & my Dad were drinking after they got home from The War until Jimmy plowed the car into a huge tree & Daddy went through the windshield.

Jimmy called my grandparents from the hospital. When they got there, Grandma, literally, went after him with her purse. Chased him to hit him all the while screaming that her baby had survived The War to be MURDERED by Jimmy.

Daddy survived but Jimmy almost didn't. A vengeful mother is a terrible thing! The tree is still there, too!

Regards,

Patti

I suggest you go and do your history, as you will find Ernst Rohm was homosexual and his death spouted the persecution of all homosexuals during the 30s and the second world war.

Thanks for your input but I suggest you have a rethink lol :)

34th Bomb Group 8 weeks ago

As YOU know, Cal - on the Night of the Long Knives, Rohm was found sleeping with a lovely young man who was "taken out and shot." Literally.

Rohm was given the option of blowing his brains out - which he did not take advantage of. Stupid man.

He then was hanged on Hitler's order.

You know far better than I that some people just won't acknowledge the truth. I certainly don't know why - but this slaughter of Rohm and his buddies was probably the first overt act on the part of Hitler and his buddies that homosexuality would not be tolerated under the regime. My opinion is that Hitler couldn't have Rohm around because Rohm knew far too much about Hitler's private life. It's often been supposed that Hitler was gay, and there's a bucketful of incidents that support this idea.

Hitler didn't know what the hell he was - but Rohm did, hence Hitler had to take him out of the picture before Rohm started talking.
